Atty Danilo Lihaylihay Files Impeachment Case vs Pres Noynoy Aquino
By Lilybeth G. Ison
The House of Representatives’ minority bloc has junked the impeachment complaint of a certain Danilo Lihaylihay against President Benigno S. Aquino III.
House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, in a press briefing on Wednesday, said that based on their review and deliberation, the evidence in the Lihaylihay complaint against the President is weak.
“We in the Minority have decided not to endorse the impeachment complaint filed against the President by taxpayer Atty. Danilo Lihaylihay. In the first place, we have not yet seen evidence of an impeachable offense in this complaint, although we are still concluding our own investigation,” he said.
More importantly, Suarez said, the minority realized that they should be able to practice what they preached.
“If we truly believe that impeachment should no longer be trivialized for partisan purposes, then we ought to set an example ourselves,” he said.
The impeachment complaint stems from the sale of a government property to a private firm back in 1992.
Lihaylihay previously petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.
He also filed a plunder case against former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the alleged illegal sale of the old Iloilo Airport.
Meanwhile, House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali Gonzales said he doubted that the minority could launch a successful impeachment bid against the President.
He said any impeachment complaint would have to go through the House justice committee thru normal process unless it could muster the required 1/3 votes of the total members of the Lower Chamber to directly transmit the complaint to the Senate for trial.
