BPI Manager and PAL Official Barred from Testimony on Corona Impeachment
Defense lead counsel Serafin Cuevas objected on Tuesday to the presentation of the assistant manager of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)-Ayala branch and the vice president for sales of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) on the 21st day of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Cuevas, a retired Supreme Court associate justice, told the Senate impeachment court that the testimony of Mara Arcilla and Enrique Javier are immaterial and irrelevant because they are not covered in the impeachment complaint.
The defense lead counsel said that in Article III, the prosecution cannot present evidence because they have no accusations embodied in that complaint.
Likewise, the defense also moved to strike House of Representatives private prosecutor Atty. Marlon Manuel’s statements out of the record of the impeachment court.
Manuel cited that the Coronas used the PAL Platinum card for four international travels.
Impeachment court Presiding Officer and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile earlier said that Arcilla would merely be allowed to present the bank records of the chief magistrate.
