Cebu City Fire Department Raises Alarm

The Cebu City Fire Department recorded at least 219 fire alarms last year compared to only 117 blazes in 2010.

Cebu Provincial Fire Marshal Esmael Codilla, who was once a Cebu City fire marshal for eight years, said the people’s lack of awareness regarding fire hazards could be the reason fire incidents rose by 87.18 percent last year.

He advised Cebu City Fire Marshal Aderson Comar to focus on fire prevention by conducting massive information dissemination to city residents.

”I’m not implying that he has shortcomings, but he’ll have to double his efforts, because if there are many fire incidents, many people are unaware of prevention,” Codilla said.

Although Senior Supt. Comar has a higher rank than Supt. Codilla, the latter occupies a higher position being the provincial fire marshal.

Comar is under the supervision of Codilla under the present setup, so he advised the city fire marshal to focus on fire prevention.

Codilla acknowledged the ability of Comar in rescue operation but he clarified that proactive measures should be given priority.
