Chief Justice Renato Corona Impeachment Coverage

The Senate, sitting as impeachment court for the trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, has decided to hold an all senators-caucus every Monday to discuss motions and pleadings at the Office of the Senate President.

”We will convene every Monday an all senators-caucus to discuss motions and pleadings,” Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto III announced before adjourning Tuesday’s morning session of the chamber.

Last Monday, the senator-judges convened in a caucus where they discussed the motions and pleadings but when asked by the media for details, Senator Panfilo Lacson said the lawmakers agreed not to divulge any detail of the caucus pertaining to the ongoing impeachment trial.

At the start of the impeachment trial on Monday afternoon, the impeachment court denied the motion by the defense panel asking to conduct a preliminary hearing to discuss what the defense team described as “defective” impeachment complaint.

The impeachment court also denied a motion of Atty. Fernando Perito, who asked the senator-judges to cite the House prosecutors for contempt of court for holding press conferences to show documentary evidence prior to the impeachment trial.

Enrile ruled that Perito, a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), has no authority to face the impeachment court because he “neither is a member of the defense or prosecution.”

The impeachment court rules prohibit the senator-judges, prosecutors as well as private prosecutors, the defense panel and its counsels to refrain from discussing the merits of the case outside the impeachment court.
