Congressmen Lack of Preparation in Corona Impeachment

By Jelly F. Musico

Some Senator-judges expressed disappointment on Tuesday over the lack of preparation by the prosecution panel in presenting evidence and witnesses during the second day of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

The lack of readiness prompted the Senate, sitting as impeachment court, to postpone the start of the trial proper to Wednesday.

”The prosecutors should be well-prepared because they are one accusing the Chief Justice,” Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said.

Senator Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero said: “It is unfortunate” that the trial proper did not start on Tuesday.

”The Senate has prepared well for this and so much time has been spent just to be ready for this impeachment trial and now the start of the trial proper has been postponed,” Escudero said.

Both Trillanes and Escudero expect the actual impeachment trial to start on Wednesday as the prosecution promised to finally ready to present their evidences and witnesses against Corona.

Presiding officer Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile adjourned the proceedings after the prosecution failed to concur that their computer-generated pieces of evidence for Article 2 of the impeachment complaint were authentic.

The prosecution preferred to tackle first the Article 2 of the impeachment complaint, which focuses on the failure of Corona to disclose his statement of assets and liabilities and networth as provided in the Constitution.

On the part of the defense panel, Atty. Serafin Cuevas said the trial should start in the Article 1, which accuses Corona of “partiality and subservience in cases involving the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
