Dengue cases in Cebu City, Philippines Down

Dengue cases in Cebu City have significantly decreased by more than half as of January 11, 2012 compared to the same period last year.

The Cebu City Epidemiology Surveillance and Statistics Unit (CESSU) of the Cebu City Health Department has recorded 20 cases only from January 1 to 11 this year compared to 41 in the same period last year.

CESSU records reveal the cases were spread to at least 15 barangays in the city with Tisa and Pasil having two cases each.

Cebu City Epidemiologist Durenda Macasucol said there was no reported fatality so far this month compared to two deaths in January last year.

But one of the victims of the virus is lawyer Mikel Rama, son of Mayor Michael Rama, who has been confined in a private hospital since Tuesday.

The mayor said Mikel has not reached a point where blood transfusion is needed but the family is preparing for it.

He said they have at least five blood donors available just in case the need comes.

The mayor said Mikel was a little better and he hopes he will be well in time.

”I hope everything will be better and his platelet will go up and he will be declared out of danger,” Rama said.

The mayor said Mikel has no idea where he got the virus since he had been around the past weeks.
