Earthquake in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Triggers Tsunami Alert

Classes and government offices were suspended in Negros Oriental province as an offshoot of Monday’s strong earthquake.

Angelo Tiongson, executive officer of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), said Governor Roel Degamo has directed the suspension of all government offices in the province, while the Department of Education (DepEd) officials suspending classes in all levels.

At the same time, Tiongson said they are appealing to the residents to stay calm but vigilant with the reported tsunami alert level 2 they received from the Phivolcs in Cebu.

Residents here panicked and traffic was at a standstill as they went out of residences, malls, offices and other edifices after the 11:49 quake and aftershocks were strongly felt in the city. Their fears were later compounded by the tsunami alert.

Tiongson said they believe a locally generated tsunami could have already taken place at this time, but still utmost vigilance is required likely at least within 24 hours particularly in monitoring unusual waves in the coastlines.
