Earthquake Strikes Iloilo, Philippines and Visayas

Iloilo City is now experiencing a power blackout as a result of the Intensity 5 earthquake that rocked the province and city of Iloilo around 11:49 Monday morning.

The Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) announced that the failure was due to a turbine trip as a result of the quake.

“Panay Power Corporation (PPC) is starting up to temporarily dispatch the power requirements of the city until PEDC is online,” Nicelee Morales of the PEDC Corporate Communications said.

Meantime, the Iloilo City Emergency Crisis Center reported several minor injuries and minor cracks seen in several establishments as initial reports reached their office.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog already declared a half-day duty for city hall employees and only allowed them to go back to their respective offices to retrieve their belongings. Several schools also went on a half-day here.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs already issued a tsunami alert even as it also advised those living in coastal areas to be vigilant of a possible sea level rise.
