Equipment to enhance disaster risk reduction and management

Three water basins in Western Visayas are included in the 18 river basins that will benefit from the 600 automated rain gauges (ARGs) and 422 water level sensors that will be installed before the end of 2013.

This was disclosed by Science and Technology regional director, Engr. Rowen Gelonga following the announcement of President Benigno Aquino III in his 3rd State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the additional monitoring equipment to enhance disaster risk reduction and management.

These river basins are the Jalaur in Iloilo, Panay in Capiz and the Ilog-Hilabangan in Negros Occidental.

Gelonga said that these equipment will be in addition to the existing 12 automated weather stations (AWS) and 13 ARGs in various strategic areas in the region.

He added that within the next two months, three water level sensors provided by Smart Telecommunications will be installed in Western Visayas.
