Estero de Paco in Manila in Manila Philippines
The Philippine National Police (PNP) will put up a pilot “eco-precinct” at the Estero de Paco in Manila to help sustain clean-up and rehabilitation of the Pasig River.
PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa and ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) managing director Gina Lopez signed a Memorandum of Agreement in Camp Crame on Tuesday, formalizing a partnership to join hands in the Pasig River clean-up project.
Under the agreement, the PNP will establish police presence to deter further violations of environmental laws and ordinances along Estero de Paco, a major tributary of the Pasig River.
An “eco precinct,” manned by “river warriors” of the Manila Police District will serve as stewards of the Pasig River, and will be responsible in the enforcement of applicable laws and ordinances, particularly against persons and entities who illegally dispose waste and environmentally harmful materials into the Pasig River or its tributaries.
The agreement also allowed AFI to provide training for PNP personnel who will be deployed as “Pasig River Warriors,” who will man the “eco-precincts.
Verzosa said the establishment of eco-precincts under the PNP-AFI agreement serves as a model upon which similar eco-precincts shall be created nationwide.
