Finance ministers from 10 Union of South American Nations Member States

Finance ministers from 10 Union of South American Nations member states discussed ways to jointly deal with the global economic crisis during a meeting here Friday.

The ministers discussed the possibility of coordinating their countries’ macroeconomic policies, strengthening regional financial supervision and deepening cooperation on trade and investment.

The meeting was “very satisfying,” said Peruvian Finance Minister Luis Castilla.

Calling Unasur “a great block that knows how to defend its interests,” Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said the meeting demonstrated the region’s determination to build an economic fortress to protect it from the crisis.

The 10 Unasur countries at the meeting included Peru, Argentine, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay and Uruguay. The other two member states – Bolivia and Suriname – did not attend.
