Globe, Smart, Sun Philippines Shut Down
The country’s largest mobile phone providers have temporarily shut off their services in the procession route of the Black Nazarene to frustrate terrorist threat.
“We have been briefed by government regarding the security situation with respect to the Black Nazarene procession. Based on that briefing, we are fully cooperating with government in order to address the situation and have agreed to take certain precautionary measures to enhance public safety in and around the procession areas,” Smart Communications Inc. said in a statement.
Yolanda Crisanto, Globe head of Corporate Communications, confirmed the disruption of its services in selected areas in relation to the procession of the Black Nazarene.
“This is in line with the national security operations of the government,” Crisanto said.
The telco’s move came on the heels of a request in Malacanang and the Philippine National Police to frustrate terrorist threat in the procession of the Black Nazarene.
