The business community here is looking forward to an upbeat economy despite apprehensions that the brunt of the financial crisis affecting big countries last year will manifest this 2012.

Iloilo Business Club (IBC) executive director Lea Lara said they still do not know what it is actually going to happen. They were just forewarned by an economic expert during a recent gathering.

Nonetheless, Lara underscored that they have high expectations that there is going to be a “good turn of business” this year in Iloilo.

Lara cited that they have lot of things to look forward to especially in the infrastructure sector, to include among others, the completion of projects funded by both the government and the private sector.

More hotels are expected to sprout in the city within the year, she added.

Likewise, they expect to see significant projects at the end of the year, referring to the ongoing development undertaken by the Megaworld Corporation at the Mandurriao district.

In terms of social services, Lara said the city has its hands full with public investment on socialized housing that will provide homes to those displaced by big projects.

The river to road projects including slaughterhouse are expected to be completed within the year, she said.

Meanwhile, Lara noted that it is a challenge now for the city government to prove that the increase in real property tax (RPT) which took effect this year is really worth it.
