Media Killing in the Philippines

Reaffirming her strong commitment to solve the media killings in the country, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to intensify efforts to stop the violence against members of the media.

The President also approved a P2-million donation to the Freedom Fund for Filipino Journalists to help the bereaved families of journalists seeking justice for their slain relatives through the courts.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the President directed Task Force Usig to create a “tracker team” that will go after the suspected killers of media personalities.

He said the Chief Executive also underscored the need for the speedy resolution of cases filed in court against suspects in media killings as well as the protection of government witnesses.

“This is the highlight of the wonderful meeting that we had. The President really showed her concern about this issue. This reaffirms her commitment to the welfare of the working men and women of media and of course, to press freedom,” Remonde said.

He said the Malacanang meeting was also held in anticipation of the coming election season which is usually marred by an increase in violent incidents. – PNA
