New High School in Naga, Cebu

The city government of Naga in southern Cebu plans to put up a high school in every barangay, according to Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong.

”If we can, we will establish a high school in every barangay so the students will not anymore go to other places to study. We want to bring education right at their doorstep”, Chiong said.

In line with this, Chiong said they were seeking approval from the DepEd regional office to implement their “Integrated Elementary and High School” approach where in the elementary and high schools are placed with only one principal.

Chiong said that since 2007, he was able to open 10 additional high schools in Naga, bringing the total number of high schools to 16 in 28 barangays.

Chiong said they would also increase the number of local teachers form 120 to 150 to augment the DepEd teachers.

The local teachers will be under the payroll of the City Government and funded by the Special Education Fund. The teachers’ salary has been increased to P10,000 from P5,500 a month.

”These local teachers are receiving a salary of P10,000 a month and their compensation covers the whole year, including the months when the pupils and students are on vacation. They are also entitled to 13th month pay,” Chiong said.
