Philippine Constitution Must Be Understood by Filipinos
Vice President Jejomar C. Binay urged the Filipino citizenry to understand and appreciate the Constitutiion. “We, the Filipino people, are the real authors of the constitution. Since it is written, then we have the access to read and understand it. It is not just the sole responsibility of lawyers but it is our duty as citizens of this country to know it”, Binay said.
He stressed in Thursday’s activity organized by the Vanguards of the Philippine Constitution in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Philippine Constitution, that the key for a working constitutional democracy lies in having a strong citizenry that is aware of its rights and duties.
Binay cited what makes the Philippine Constitution unique from any other constitutions in the world is the inclusion of “love in the listing of basic human values under which democracy should reign.” He then challenged every Filipino to be a citizen certain of his rights and duties under the constitution an dthe law and even more certain of his rights which stand above ordinary laws. It was during the administration of then President Corazon Aquino that she declared February 2 of every year as constitution day.
