Philippine Typhoons – Juaning Out, Kabayan In

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said tropical storm “Juaning” (international name: Nock-Ten) maintained its strength and accelerated slightly as it moved out from the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) Thursday morning.

As this developed, PAGASA said it is also monitoring a new tropical depression outside PAR.

The weather agency said the tropical depression is expected to enter PAR late Friday or early Saturday, but is not expected to make a landfall on the country. Once it entered the Philippine territory, it would be named “Kabayan.”

Weathermen said, however, this cyclone will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.

In its final weather bulletin on storm “Juaning” at 11 a.m. today, PAGASA said that as of 10 a.m., the center of the tropical storm was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 370 kilometers west-northwest of Laoag City (18.6°N, 116.6°E).

Still with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph, “Juaning” was moving west-northwest at 24 kph. (up from 22 kph).

The tropical storm is expected to be at 560 km. west- northwest of Laoag City or 310 km. south-southeast of Hong Kong Thursday evening. By Friday morning, “Juaning” will be at 270 km. southwest of Hong Kong.
