by Josephine T. Cemine
The Philippines-Australia Community Assistance Program approved a three-million grant to Holy Name University for the establishment of a water testing laboratory under FOCAS 4: Water and Sanitation. The laboratory will house HNU-WATERSS, a service facility that will include Water Assessment, Testing, Education and Research Support Services. Responding to the expressed need of the different government agencies and non-government organizations, HNU-WATERSS is geared towards the following objectives: to establish and operate an accredited and registered environmental laboratory; to develop a management information system for efficient dissemination of information; to provide awareness-building activities for active participation of informed public in water quality management and monitoring and to develop linkages for resource pooling.
The water testing laboratory is targeted to be fully operational by the second semester of this school year. The operations of the laboratory will be under the supervision of the Chair of the Math and Natural Sciences Department in close partnership with the Center for Research and Local Governance.
