Philippines Chief Justice Trial Uses Tagalog Language
A proposal of Catholic Bishop Jose Oliveros of Bulacan to conduct the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona in Tagalog has drawn support from the senator-judges, including Pampanga Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid.
Lapid, who once suggested the use of Filipino language in the Senate plenary session, said it would be more interesting for the people to get involved in the impeachment trial if it will be done in the national language.
”The Filipino masses will be more interested to participate in the impeachment trial if the discussions in the Senate will be done in Filipino,” Lapid, a high school graduate, said in a press statement.
“What is important is that for people like me would be able to see somehow the truth in the impeachment trial of the Chief Justice,” Lapid added.
Senator Manuel Villar, a former Senate president, also supported the proposal, saying “there is no question about it (the proposal).”
”Actually what should be the question is that why are we using English? That’s a good proposal so that everybody can understand,” Villar said.
