Philippines Live Coverage of Corona Impeachment Trial

There was no presentation of evidence and witnesses during the fifth day of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona at the Senate on Tuesday as the defense panel insisted that there was no allegation of ill-gotten wealth in Article II of the eight articles of impeachment against the chief magistrate.

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares was supposed to testify on Tuesday about Corona’s Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for taxable years 1992 to 2010 before the Impeachment Court presided by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.

However, it did not materialize because of the memorandum filed before the court by the defense, blocking such a testimony.

At the start of Day 5 of the impeachment proceedings, Senator-Judge Gregorio Honasan asked both the prosecution and defense panels whether or not they are still adhering to presumption of innocence in the impeachment case. Both the prosecution and the defense panels replied in the affirmative.

Senator-Judge Miriam Defensor-Santiago asked for a list of witnesses, the substance and contents of the testimonies of both the prosecution and defense panels so as to determine when the impeachment trial will wind up.

The defense and prosecution panels agreed to submit a list of evidence and witnesses before the Impeachment Court.
