Philippines Owns Benham Rise

Senator Edgardo J. Angara has expressed belief that the Philippines can attain energy self-sufficiency once the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas (UNCLOS) recognizes the country’s claim to the Benham Rise, a submerged volcanic ridge situated near the province.

Angara said the Philippines will not only gain 13 million in additional territory should UNCLOS approves the claim but also a potentially oil-rich area.

The Benham Rise can provide our country its own energy, and also set off the opportunity to export gas, copper and other minerals,” Angara said during his recent visit here.

The senator said that DENR studies for the past five years in the Benham Rise showed huge methane deposits that poses the province as a possible natural gas exporter.

“We are the only claimant of Benham Rise which bolsters the country’s bid to own it unlike the disputed Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal in the west side,” he said.
