Philippines schools and business establishments to plant trees

The Cebu Provincial Board (PB) has passed a resolution urging towns to encourage schools and business establishments to plant trees to prevent flooding, landslides and soil erosion.

The PB said it will also be advantageous if each local government unit will have its own nursery for a ready supply of seedlings so they can track the number of trees being planted.

”They could have a hand in determining what will be planted,” said Cebu PB Member Thadeo Ouano, chairman of the committee on environment and author of the resolution.

”It is very advisable that we should plant more trees, especially during this time when we are now experiencing severe and massive flooding in the low lands,” the two-page resolution read.

The effects of logging and soil erosion are “clearly seen and felt” by the victims of flooding in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Dumaguete.

But Ouano pointed out that the catastrophic events can be prevented and minimized if people acknowledge that each citizen plays an important role in preserving the environment.
