It was ironic that the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey match was billed “The Event” when it turned out a non-event.

Let us face this: the Pacman has been looked up to, admired, and respected worldwide because of his ability to fight like crazy, and any paying viewer expects no less than that.

For Team Pacquaio, this high level of standard can be assured, for even if he losses, he will loss fighting a good fight, blood and sweat oozing from his battle-scarred face, an image of spartan endurance right to the very end, even a defeating end.

But Team Pacquiao must understand, and realize, that much of the expectation in any Pacquiao fight was also to see this rags-to-riches man demolish the enemy in no less a dramatic fashion than a knockout, or at the very least, a knockdown.

This was the reason Pacquiao now is a hot potato in the boxing world, where promoters leave no stone unturned just to have him in.

This was the rationale why only Pacquiao can assemble millions of warm bodies, and millions more glued to their television sets, because he exudes humble confidence, and can set the stage for an exciting bout in a serious business as a contest of brains and brawl.

Coach Freddie Roach was right, though, when he said it was hard to engage a fighter who was in “survival mode,” a phrase that will now be a part of boxing vocabulary.

In the same breath, that was also a challenge: how to pummel into submission a boxer who willingly submits himself to become a punching bag, literally.

Of course, a knockdown cannot be squeezed just like that by a magic wand; it has to be built-up, an opening must be created, a lot of combinations must be employed simultaneously with lightning speed and classical footwork.

2GO took part and won in Discovery Channel and Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center’s (NFSDC) Discovery Dash 2010 last April 30 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

The event marks the launch of Discovery Channel and Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center’s partnership as they collaborate to make science accessible and engaging to Filipinos of all ages.

Hosted by singer-actress Nikki Gil, Discovery Dash had the participating teams race through pit stops at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall to solve challenges that tested their wits and knowledge on science, technology and art. Each pit stop in the Discovery Dash competition features popular Discovery Channel programs such as Planet Green, Man Vs. Wild, Dirty Jobs and Survivorman.

As one of the event’s sponsors, 2GO sent in a team to join the dash as well. The 2GO team went up against other participants, which included basketball players, musicians, radio personalities, other sponsors and former Ms. Earth beauty queens among others.

There were two race categories: the first was for the sponsors while the second was for celebrity participants. In the end, Nyoy Volante, Mike Chan and Noelle Cassandra of Team Smart Coed finished first in the celebrity category while the 2GO team with Daniel Tumalad, Mark Ceneta and Pierre Vergara emerged as the winner for the first race category.

The sports leaders in the country have expressed optimism under the leadership of new President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Cojuangco Aquino, seeing bright hope and unity that would bring success to Philippines sports.

Big sports personalities spearheaded by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco attended the historic inauguration of Aquino on Wednesday at the Quirino Grandstand.

Former Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Ricardo Garcia said he foresees a harmonious working relationship between the PSC and the POC leaders with the election of Aquino as the country’s 15th President.

”The sports would be better now because the PSC and the POC will be working together. It’s been a long time now that the PSC chairman and the POC president have not been talking each other which is not healthy to sports,” Garcia said.

Cojuangco, uncle of President Aquino, and outgoing PSC chairman Harry Angping, always find themselves in the opposing sides in terms running the Philippine sports, specially when it comes to policies pertaining to the Filipino athletes’ participation in the international competitions.

”We are waiting for a good time that PSC and the POC will be working together for the good of sports,” Garcia said.

Despite intermittent bickering among sports leaders, the Philippines sports have achieve several milestones under the outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, having won the country’s first overall championship in the Southeast Asian Games in 2005.

For former PSC chairman Manny Lopez, Aquino’s love for sports would bring new hope for Philippine sports.

”We see a very bright future ahead of the Philippine sports because first and foremst, the president elect is a sportsman by heart. We know very well that he practices shooting regularly and he has a big heart and concerns for our athletes,” Lopez said.

Both Lopez and Garcia are reportedly being eyed to fill up two of the four commissioner seats of the government-run PSC.

Swimming president Mark Joseph described Aquino’s term as Olympic presidency since four major Olympic events will be held under the six-year term of President Aquino.

”We look forward for a brighter Philippine sports because he (Aquino) talks about uplifting the lives of every Filipino which would mean that sports would play an important role in this administration,” Joseph, a former swimmer, said.
