Respect for Human Rights in the Philippines

The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has hailed the entire police force in this province for its strict adherence to and respect for the human rights of civilians.

Lawyer Manuel Pontanal, Napolcom regional director for Central Luzon, said the Aurora Provincial Police Office and the various police stations in the province stood out among their counterparts in the region for upholding human rights and civil liberties, a fact recognized and reciprocated by the citizenry through community support.

Pontanal said the people of the province have demonstrated their respect to the police that the Philippine National Police (PNP) virtually has a spotless record when it comes to human rights violations.

“Here in Aurora, there are practically no problematic cops. People respect the police so much because they do not violate human rights and because they do not get involved in extortion and other irregularities,” he said.

He made the assessment following a recent visit here of a Napolcom team for inspection and management audit of personnel, facilities and operations of the Aurora police. They were welcomed by provincial police director, Senior Superintendent Ervin Gumban.
