SALN of Renato Corona Marked as Evidence

Both the prosecution and defense panels in the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona on Wednesday marked as part of their evidence the statements of assets and liabilities and networth (SALNs) of the chief magistrate.

Atty. Mario Bautista did the marking for the prosecution panel and Atty. Serafin Cuevas for the defense.

Senator-judge Franklin Drilon suggested that the marking should be done outside the impeachment court but Cuevas explained it is important for them to mark right away the SALNs as their evidence.

Presiding Officer Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile sustained the explanation of Cuevas who clarified that they have not yet adopted the SALNs of the respondent as evidence.

SC Clerk of Court Enriqueta Esguerra-Vidal submitted to the impeachment court Corona’s SALNs despite the 1989 SC resolution prohibiting the clerk of court to bring out in public the SALN of the justice without approval of the court.

Both the defense and the prosecution have been given time until Thursday to scrutinize the first pieces of evidence presented before the impeachment court.
