Seafront Shipyard in Mariveles, Bataan Hit by Fire

Fire of still unknown cause destroyed a warehouse full of chemical fertilizers and empty sacks inside the fortified Seafront Shipyard in the seaside village of Lucanin here on Saturday morning.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Romeo Abergas said the amount of damage was placed at P3 million for the warehouse and P135 million for the chemical fertilizers like urea and other contents of the building, for a total of P138 million.

Workers said the warehouse was full of imported chemical fertilizers, some marked “Harvester” with new deliveries only made on Friday by a vessel coming from a foreign country.

Senior Superintendent Arnold Gunnacao, Bataan police director, said that security guard Joel Levantino suffered second degree burn on his feet but was already in stable condition. There was no report of other injuries.

Dense black bellowing smoke many meters high for hours filled the space above the shipyard adjacent to the Roman Superhighway.

Abergas said the blaze started at 6:30 a.m. A dozen fire trucks responded and placed the fire under control at 9:30 a.m.
