Sona Aquino on Barangay Electrification

The government has energized 1,520 sitios around the country within a three-month period at a cost of P814 million, exceeding the goal of installing electricity to 1,300 sitios at a cost of P1 million each sitio.

President Benigno Aquino III, in his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday, said Department of Energy and National Electrification Administration not only met the the target in a short period but also surpassed the goal compared to the two-year period required in the past.

He said the government was also able to save P486 million from the electrification project as the administration challenged DOE and NEA, with P1.3 billion fund allocation, to electrify 1,300 sitios.

President Aquino lauded Energy Secretary Rene Almendras for doing a good job.

”I give you the credit; you never seem to run out of energy. With public service, you are not only ever-ready, but like an energizer bunny too — you keep on going, and going, and going,” the President said.

He said that in the past, an electrical wire needed only to reach the barangay hall for an entire barangay to be deemed energized in the pretext for the claim that 99.98 percent of the country’s barangays had electricity.
