UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) Huge Success
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday stressed that the ongoing UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) has been a great success.
Speaking to Brazilian reporters at a press conference here, Ban said he firmly believes that the summit is “a great success” and a draft outcome document has been finalized to “put us all towards greater sustainability.”
Ban said that member states have agreed in 26 areas of the final document to be presented on Friday and “this is a very good document; this is the vision on which we can build our dreams, our visions.”
He noted that Rio+20 is the “beginning of our journey towards greater sustainability.”
The secretary-general said he was “happy and satisfied” with what has been achieved during Rio+20, thanking the Brazilian government and people for “contributing to the success” of this conference.
Member states have agreed to establish Sustainable Development Goals (MDGs), which should build upon the successes of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), he said.
